Get to Know Allyson

If I have never been to therapy before, what should I expect? How do I know if I should go, and how do I start?

It is completely normal to feel unsure or even a little intimidated if you’ve never done this before. Starting therapy can feel like stepping into the unknown, but that’s also what makes it such a powerful act of self-care and courage. The first few sessions will focus on us getting to know each other so that this can be a comfortable space for you. The sessions will focus on me getting some background information from you, we will set some goals for sessions, set a regular schedule, and use our sessions to work towards your goals. Some of the things I may ask might seem odd or repetitive at first but they are for me to get a better understanding of you, your life experiences, and what areas of your life you want to improve on. You’ll also get a feel for me, and I’ll invite you to notice how our dynamic feels to you. Therapy only works if the relationship feels safe and supportive, so we’ll check in on that together.

How will our relationship be different than relationships I have with friends/loved ones?

Our therapeutic relationship will be different from your relationships with friends or loved ones in a few important ways. First and foremost, this space is entirely for you. That means we're not here to meet my needs or to maintain a mutual relationship the way you might with a friend or a partner. Instead, I'm here to support you understand your feelings, and help you grow without judgment or expectation.

What degrees do you have and what techniques are you trained in?

I earned my Bachelors Degree in Social Work with a minor in Psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in 2015. After working for three years in various community and school settings I returned to VCU and earned my Masters in Social Work graduating in 2020. I have been trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Dialectical Behavior Therapy which are at the core of my approach in working with my clients.
